Helioflowers1st PrizeAlex BenisonLandscapeNikon D90Tokina 11-16mm f2.8This is a field east of Denver, CO USA. It is comprised of 11 bracketed exposures at 2 ev spacing per shot. I was able to capture the sun peaking out of the clouds, I had to wait about 20 min for the right moment, but it was worth it.11 shots, with 2 ev spacing

Front of House, The LDS Conference Center in Salt Lake City1st Prize ArchitectureRyan GardnerArchitectureCanon EOS 7D18-55 EF-S ISBracketed for shadows and highlights +/- 1.6 EV - I shot a full spherical panorama from this location. The image was stitched in Pt Gui Pro and run through 32 Float. Basic adjustments were made in 32 Float, veiling glare removed, and shadows / highlights adjusted.

TiVo1st Prize FreestyleAlex BenisonFreestylepentax K10DSigma 10-20mmThis wonderful juxtaposition is from an abandoned ranch house in the great Prairie of South Dakota. The movie Dances with Wolves was shot near this location, and Ted Turner has thousands of buffalo roaming the plains just over the hills out the window of this old house. This shot was taken at midday (a photographers kryptonite) but through the use of high dynamic range I was able to get a nice image.5 shot bracket, 2 ev spacing

Looking back at ChicagoHonorable MentionAlex BenisonArchitecturepentax K10DSigma 10-20mmThis is a shot from near the planetarium, looking back at Chicago, IL USA. I was in Chicago last year for a conference and was only able to get out and take pictures one afternoon/evening. I was really happy about how the rocks underwater were visible in the really long exposures. This view would truly not be possible without HDR, although the human visual system saw it this way so it is a much truer representation of the actual scene.5 shot bracket, 2 ev spacing

Evening TidesHonorable MentionJohn AdamsFreestylePanasonic Lumix FZ5020-4003 shots at 1 EV. Taken just after sunset at the local harbor. Processed only using HDR Expose.

Old packaging plantHonorable MentionAlex BenisonFreestylepentax K10DSigma 10-20mmThis is a shot from an old packaging plant in an abandoned mine in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. This shot looks out the broken window to the nearby mountains where the fall colors of the aspen trees are visible. This is a 7 shot 2 ev spaced bracket

DecayHonorable MentionAlex BenisonFreestyleNikon D90Tokina 11-16mm f2.8This is from an abandoned mining town deep in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. This location was once one of the largest Zinc mines in Colorado, but is now long abandoned. Nature has taken over and the beautiful interplay between nature's order and human order and decay are wonderfully displayed.7 shot bracket 2 ev spacing

DecayHonorable MentionAlex BenisonFreestylepentax K10DSigma 10-20mm"On our drive back to Colorado from South Dakota we decided to take the long route and go through the black hills and then down through Wyoming. Right after we got into Wyoming, on this little two lane highway, there was a traffic jam going off into the horizon. Everyone was out of their car and after some discussion we decided to backtrack and find another ""creative"" route. We ended up on dirt roads and literally in the middle of nowhere (it probably added like 4 hours to the drive). But it might have been worth it, because we stumbled upon the almost totally deserted town of Ardmore, SD. As we approached I could see the rusty old water tower and I had my suspicion that it would be pretty empty, but it was almost a total ghost town. It was super spooky, it felt like a Stephen King novel. Ardmore is a town in Fall River County, South Dakota, United States. The town was founded in 1889. In 1927, President Calvin Coolidge stopped in Ardmore. The town survived the Great Depression without one family on welfare. Rough times eventually fell on Ardmore, and by 2004 it was an isolated ghost town. The last time the town had a recorded population when the 1980 census showed a population of 16 residents. The town is believed to be named after Dora Moore, a local teacher and is at an elevation of 3,556 feet. Among its former residents was the outlaw Doc Middleton."5 shot bracket, 2 ev spacing

Controlling the LightHonorable MentionRyan GardnerFreestyleCanon EOS 7D18-55 EF-S ISControlling the Light of The Conference Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The LDS Conference Center has a mind-blowing number of lights that are used to support the wide range of events that it hosts. They are controlled from this room by a lighting engineer.Bracketed +/- 2 EV - shot a lot of shots to stitch together, but ended up using a narrower view that just showed the lighting controls and the window. Obviously the lights in the control room are much dimmer than the lights on the stage - and no single exposure could capture this dynamic range effectively. 32 Float made it quite easy to process this image - it took me only a matter of a few minutes. Basic veiling glare, brightness / contrast, shadow / highlight, and saturation adjustment were all that were needed to tame this image.
